Built for Busy Households
Asphalt Paving in Lee's Summit is largely a homeowner market. The Census puts owner-occupancy at 73.4 percent, well above Kansas City's, and households average 2.54 people. More drivers per house usually means more cars, more turning in the driveway and more weight on the edges. Wider drives, added parking pads and extensions that let a family stop parking on the street are typical projects for households like these.
A city that grew in a hurry. Lee's Summit had 2,554 residents in 1950 and 46,418 in 1990. By 2020 it counted 101,108, and the 2025 estimate is 107,514. A large share of the city's driveways were poured or paved during that run, which means whole neighborhoods reach the same stage of wear at about the same time. Asphalt drives from the 1990s and early 2000s are now at the age where owners are choosing between resurfacing and full replacement.
Widening a driveway the right way. Adding width is not just laying asphalt next to the old edge. The new section needs the same base depth and compaction as the existing drive, or it will settle and leave a ridge at the seam. We cut a clean joint into the existing pavement, build the base out, and tie the new mat in so it sheds water across the full width. If the work changes where the drive meets the street, check with the city about approach requirements before we start; rules for that public section vary from city to city.
Lakes, limestone and slopes. The name comes from the town's position at the highest point along the railroad between Kansas City and St. Louis, and the city sits at about 1,028 feet. Six major human-made reservoirs lie in and around Lee's Summit, including Lake Jacomo and Longview Lake, and the Bethany Falls limestone runs beneath the city, forming bluffs near Longview Lake. Homes on rolling lots near the lakes often have long, sloped drives where runoff is the main enemy. We pay close attention to crown, edge support and where water exits at the bottom of the hill.
Keeping a newer drive in shape. If your driveway is less than ten years old, the work is mostly maintenance:
- Seal hairline cracks before they widen through a freeze season that, regionally, runs from late October into early April.
- Sealcoat once the asphalt has cured, then on a regular cycle so the surface does not dry out and ravel.
- Fix small low spots early, before water and clay soil turn them into potholes.
A few hours of upkeep every couple of years is much cheaper than early replacement.
Downtown and commercial lots. Downtown Lee's Summit is on the National Register of Historic Places, roughly ten blocks by ten blocks, and hosts events like Downtown Days, Oktoberfest and the monthly Fourth Fridays Art Walk. Busy lots that serve shops, offices and churches wear faster where cars turn and brake. We resurface, patch, sealcoat and restripe them, and when we restripe we lay out accessible spaces to the 2010 ADA Standards.
HOA neighborhoods. If your subdivision has a homeowners association, its covenants may set rules on driveway width, materials or work hours. Look through them before we schedule, and we can give you a written scope to send for approval if one is needed.

Lee's Summit Questions
Can you widen my Lee's Summit driveway so we can park three cars?
Yes. We saw-cut a clean edge on the existing drive, build a new base to the same depth, and pave the added width so it drains with the rest of the surface. If the widening reaches the street, ask the city about the approach section first.
My subdivision drive is about 20 years old. Resurface or replace?
It depends on the base. If the drive is firm and the damage is mostly surface cracking and fading, a resurfacing overlay may be enough. If it has sunken spots or wide cracks across the whole surface, replacement lasts longer. We check both before recommending one.
Does my HOA have to approve a new driveway?
Some homeowners associations regulate driveway width, material or contractor hours. If you have one, check your covenants, and we will provide a written scope you can submit if approval is required.
We live on a sloped lot near Longview Lake. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but it changes the design. Long sloped drives need good edge support and a plan for where runoff exits so water does not cut under the asphalt. We grade for that from the start.
