Not KCMO: Paving on the Kansas Side

Asphalt paving in Kansas City, Kansas starts with a point that trips up a lot of people: this is a separate city from Kansas City, Missouri. KCK is in Kansas, in Wyandotte County, and since voters approved it in 1997 it has been governed together with the county as the Unified Government of Wyandotte County. It has its own rules, its own departments and its own neighborhoods. With 156,607 residents at the 2020 census, it is the third-largest city in Kansas.

Neighborhoods that used to be towns

Today's KCK was stitched together from several earlier communities. The modern city formed in March 1886 when five municipalities, among them Armourdale and Wyandotte, consolidated; Argentine followed in 1910 and Rosedale in 1922. Places like Strawberry Hill, Quindaro and the bluff-top areas grew on their own timelines. For pavement, that history means a wide range of conditions. Older homes may have narrow driveways, shared drives or surfaces that have been patched over and over, sometimes with asphalt laid on top of older concrete or brick.

Before quoting, we figure out what is actually under the surface. A driveway that has been overlaid several times can be thick in some spots and thin in others, and old concrete underneath will send its joints and cracks up through new asphalt. In those cases, removing the old layers is often better than adding another.

Repair before replacement

Many KCK homeowners do not need a whole new driveway. They need the failing parts fixed properly. Our repair work includes:

  • Saw-cut patching: cutting out a failed section, rebuilding the base and paving it back flush
  • Pothole repair at aprons and parking pads
  • Crack sealing with hot rubberized filler to keep water out
  • Edge repair where the asphalt has broken away from the yard
  • Resurfacing when the surface is worn but the base is solid
  • Sealcoating once repairs are done, to protect the whole surface

Hills, bluffs and river bottoms

KCK sits at Kaw Point, where the Kansas River meets the Missouri. Parts of the city are on bluffs and hills; others are in the low river bottoms. Each brings its own pavement problem. On a steep driveway, water picks up speed and erodes the edges, and hot asphalt is harder to compact evenly on a grade, so we pay close attention to rolling and to where the water exits at the bottom. In the bottoms, the issue is flat ground and slow drainage, so building up the base and making sure the surface sheds water matters more than usual. This city knows floods well: in July 1951, floodwater overtopped the levees protecting Argentine and Armourdale and reached the rooftops of houses in Armourdale.

Cold snaps and freeze-thaw

KCK's climate is humid continental, with a January average of about 31.0 degrees and a record low of minus 23 degrees set in December 1989. Winters bounce above and below freezing, and every time water in a crack freezes, it expands and pries the asphalt apart. Filling cracks in the fall is the single most effective way to slow that damage.

Commercial and industrial lots

Working lots for shops, churches, warehouses and multifamily buildings get the same attention: patching, overlays, sealcoating and line striping. When a lot is restriped, we lay out the accessible spaces the 2010 ADA Standards require for its size.

Kansas City, Kansas Background

  • A separate city and government. Kansas City, Kansas is a different city from Kansas City, Missouri. In 1997 voters approved the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, which governs the city and county together. KCK had 156,607 residents in 2020, third-most in Kansas.
  • Built from earlier towns. The modern city formed in March 1886 by consolidating five municipalities, including Armourdale. Argentine joined in 1910 and Rosedale in 1922, which is why housing and pavement vary so much by neighborhood.
  • Where two rivers meet. KCK sits at Kaw Point, the junction of the Missouri and Kansas rivers. In July 1951 floodwater overtopped the levees protecting Argentine and Armourdale, and about 15,000 people were evacuated.
  • Hard winters. The city has a humid continental climate, with a January average near 31.0 degrees F and a record low of minus 23 degrees F on December 22 and 23, 1989, conditions that drive freeze-thaw cracking.
  • Housing and ownership. KCK had 63,446 housing units in 2020, and about 60.9% of homes are owner-occupied (Census ACS, 2020-2024), with 87.5% of residents in the same house a year earlier.

Kansas City Questions

Is Kansas City, Kansas the same as Kansas City, Missouri for permits?

No. KCK is a separate city in Kansas, governed with Wyandotte County as the Unified Government. Rules for work at the street, such as driveway approaches, come from KCK, not from Kansas City, Missouri. We confirm the requirements for your address before starting.

My old driveway has been patched many times. Should I overlay it?

Maybe not. Layers of old patches, or old concrete underneath, can crack right through a new overlay. We test what is under the surface; if it is unstable, removing the old material and rebuilding the base usually lasts much longer.

My driveway is steep. Does that change how you pave it?

Yes. We pay extra attention to compaction on the grade, keep the edges supported and plan where runoff exits at the bottom so it does not wash out the edges or flow into the garage.

Do you do small repairs, or only full driveways?

We do both. Saw-cut patches, pothole repairs, edge fixes and crack sealing are often all an older driveway needs, and they can add years to it.
